Med. vet. Fulya Şafak

We have inevitably received information about the vaccine and its working mechanism since the outbreak of the pandemic. Thanks to the vaccines, the lives of many living things from the past to the present have been saved. An example of this is the Hepatitis vaccine in dogs in Germany. After regular vaccination from the past to the present, this disease has been eradicated from the dog population in Germany (Of course, we should not include dogs that brought to Germany from abroad into this group).

Today, modern vaccines are both safe and effective. However, it is not uncommon for dogs and cats to encounter minimal or moderate side effects after vaccination, just like humans. Vaccination can have a number of side effects.

Vaccination can have a number of side effects. What are some common ones?

  • Redness, mild swelling, and tenderness at the vaccination site
  • Small nodule at the vaccination site
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite

If these symptoms do not resolve within 24 hours after vaccination, consult your veterinarian. Small nodule at the vaccination site should also dissappear within 14 days. Please consult your veterinarian if the swelling lasts for more than 3 weeks or appears to be getting larger or more painful.

  • Ensure your pet has a warm, comfortable place to lie down and rest.
  • Avoid petting, you can touch the injection site by mistake and it can cause a mild pain.
  • You should also avoid playing with your pet since they may prefer to rest. You will receive attention from them when they feel like it.
  • Try to keep an eye on your pet every once in a while, just to make sure they are comfortable, but do not disturb them too much.
  • Don’t be alarmed if they are not very hungry, but make sure they have access to fresh water and their favourite food.
